Abstract
Seoul virus, one of the etiological agent of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, was inoculaed via intrapulmonary route into suckling and weanling SD rats. Suckling rats 24 hour-old were inoculated with 0.02ml of Seoul virus suspension(10E5
PFU/ml)
and 0.1ml was inoculated into weanng rats(3 week-old).
Suckling rats became ill and were moribund by 26 days postinfection while weanling rats develped weight loss and ruffled hair.
Various tissues were examined during the courses of infection by indirect immunofluorescenceest and Avidin-Biotin Complex(ABC) stain.
In suckling rats, the virus antigens were detected in bone marrow from the 4th day after inoculaion of virus; the lung, kidney and spleen showed fluorescence from the 7th day; and liver, adrenal pland, thymus, cerebrum, cerebellum showed
fluorescence
from the 14th day. All tissues
had viral ntigens at 26th day. In contrast, viral antigen was only in bone marrow of weanling rats.
Clinical courses, mean time to death and fatal outcome were age-dependent. So suckling rats howed higher susceptibility than weanling rats. In weanling rats, the site of primary replication vas thought to be the bone marrow.
